Prayers needed!! My worst nightmare came true!

Prayers are needed!!!
My worst fears about my neck and back condition are confirmed..I found out yesterday that on August 7th. I have to have surgery for a herniated C8 disc and I have to have Anterior Cervical Discectomy and Fusion done. Steroid injections or physical therapy are ruled out...Here is what I will have to go thru.
What is an anterior cervical discectomy & fusion (ACDF)?
Discectomy literally means "cutting out the disc." A discectomy can be performed anywhere along the spine from the neck (cervical) to the low back (lumbar). The surgeon reaches the damaged disc from the front (anterior) of the spine — through the throat area. By moving aside the neck muscles, trachea, and esophagus, the disc and bony vertebrae are accessed. In the neck area of the spine, an anterior approach is more convenient than a posterior (back) because the disc can be reached without disturbing the spinal cord, spinal nerves, and the strong neck muscles of the back. Depending on your part...icular case, one disc (single-level) or more (multi-level) may be removed.

After the disc is removed, the space between the bony vertebrae is empty. To prevent the vertebrae from collapsing and rubbing together, the surgeon fills the open disc space with a bone graft. The graft serves as a bridge between the two vertebrae to create a spinal fusion. The bone graft and vertebrae are often immobilized and held together with metal plates and screws. Following surgery the body begins its natural healing process and new bone cells are formed around the graft. After 3 to 6 months, the bone graft should join the vertebrae above and below to form one solid piece of bone. With instrumentation and fusion working together, the bone may actually grow around the plates and screws – similar to reinforced concrete.

At the very least, prayers are in order. I'm so sorry you have to go through all of this. Back surgeries are not an easy thing to recover, from what I have observed and this one sounds particularly intense. I wouldn't begin to know what you are going through at all, but will remember you in my prayers. God bless and take care, OZ.

So sawy to hear, hope all goes well. Have had serious upper and lower back pain for 35 years ( scale of 1-10 it's an 8 everyday ) due to diving accident and spinal stenosis, they wanted to operate way back then, I wouldn't let em. Six years ago it got really bad when I blew L4-L5 in lower back, spent 4 months in bed, hurt like a @*%*@*#$%#, so I know what your going thru...

Sorry to hear that you will have to have surgery Cal. I wish you all the best with the surgery and with the recovery. One step at a time. The tunnel looks too long if you try to look down from one end.

Don`t worry Oz,I too have had a double discectomy done.My C5-6 and C6-7 wore both pinched so bad I had to have both removed, same operation your having but 2 discs,I was in hospital for 3 days and 2 days in a hotel room before they would alow me to fly( as I had this done at the Foothill Hospital in Calgary,Alberta). They took both discs out and replaced with a hip bone which is very painful, but you`ll get over it as I did my friend. They also put a titanium plate with 6 screws to hold everything together while the fusion with my hip bones healed.I also wore a neck brace for 10 weeks except while sleeping. Its a well proven method and this operation has been tried and true for many years. After the 10 weeks I went to theropy for 3 weeks and everything has come back except for a slight numbness or tingling in my thumb and 1st 2 fingers, just the tips...I wish you all the best and know you will come thru this with out your pain.Remmeber your hip will be really sore but after a few days it will subside.I have lost 22% of my head turning radius and I can only sleep on my side now as sleeping on my back or stomach puts too much pressure on my neck and is very uncomfortable, but if thats all I have i`m fine with it as the pain before was a constant...Continued health Oz!

Wishing you all the best OZ in surgery and recovery. Try not to worry too much as that is detrimental to a fast recovery.

And..... good luck this weekend in the finale and looking forward to a full fall season competing with you.
