After a year or so of online poker play I found my way to several really large porker forums on the net. Most of these forums attract members by offering hosted tournaments with cash prizes, merchandise as well as trips for it’s members as well, all to be won playing inside the forum. During the online poker boom a few of these poker forums thrived and saw their membership surpass 100,000 members and the future look very bright. As for the players themselves it was a great opportunity for the average Joe or Jane to make a big splash in the online poker world without risking a ton of cash.
Sadly in April of 2011 the poker world got rivered sort of speak by the DOJ and what is now known as the infamous day called “ BLACK FRIDAY” If you play poker online at all I don’t need to explain how this day has affected the world of online poker, players and forums alike. After “BLACK FRIDAY” many of the poker forums in the 17 months seem to have fallen on hard times. With poker rooms cutting back on offered incentives to the forums because of the reduced play online and forums having to cut back on their own reward and promotions, poker forums have seen the memberships of their sites fall off to ridiculously low numbers of their new and active members alike.
The last poker forum I belong to I was a member for four years and when I joined it, at that time had some outrageous promotions. They had huge cash add tournaments, crazy cash guaranteed freerolls, trips and merchandise for the taking. However since “BLACK FRIDAY” and the lack of the owner’s participation in the day to day operations, that forum has fallen on what I consider hard times. With their active members list at an all time low and the inability to attract quality members who can contribute to the forum, they have had to cut back all of their promotions to non existent levels.
It’s easy for a poker forum to point to “BLACK FRIDAY” and claim this is what happened and it’s the reason why. But I believe the problem for them lies deeper than just saying “BLACK FRIDAY” and I’ll just leave it at that. As I look into the realm of this poker forum a little deeper, I find that it went through the ‘BLACK FRIDAY” mess right in the beginning of their start up, unless I have it wrong this forum was barley a year old when “BF” happened. Yet this forum still seems to thrive, could it be because they still offer a decent amount of cash prizes to be won for its members?
What ever the future of online poker brings for the many millions of players form around the world who like to take a few hours on the weekend to relax and play a tournament or two, I hope the mess poker has found itself in soon bounces back and stronger than ever. I do not think poker forums rely strictly on its members demanding they offer cash prizes, I would hope to thing we all get a little more out of them than just a monetary reward. It sad to see the demise of one best forums I ever belong to, but it’s nice to see that this forum looks to remain strong and go all in to the future of online poker…
