Bankroll Management is key to success as a player

Hello y'all,

I've been playing online poker since 2006, and I've experienced my far share of up and downs in the game. I have committed myself to studying and improving my game, and the one thing I learned the hard way is bankroll management.

Truth is we all measure our success in poker by our cash earned. If you have no wins or success on the felts your opinion will tend to be over looked. As fair or not fair that is up for a debate at a later time, but yeah.

I measure success by longevity in the game. A person who wins, but doesn't hold on to his money is just as bad as someone who makes "donk" plays on the felts. Your BR is your lifeline in poker, and in order to be successful you have to have an approach that is full proof.

I use a 200 ABI(Average Buy In) rule. where I take the different level of buy ins add them together divide it by how many levels I play then times it by 200. so say you play $1.10,2.20,3.30,4.40, and 5.50 levels. you would just add those together which is 16.5...I then divide that 5 since there is 5 different levels which equals 3.30 then I times that by 200. I would need atleast $660.00 in my bankroll to play all those levels. lot of people go woah $660.00 to play at the highest a 5 dollar trny is crazy, but the truth is when you figure in the field sizes are generally huge the 660 seems reasonable because the bigger the field the greater the variance thus meaning the more buy ins you will need to stay a float in those games.

Hopefully this has helped you at least think about bankroll management and how your success really comes down to how you manage ur funds :).

Its no argument in the value of your bank role! I always learned it was not 2.5% of your bank role, or time by 40. I think the most important part of that is cash games because your money is even more volatile in those cases, but reward is much more immediate too. Poker is a little like life, you gotta take advantage and use discretion in opportunities you encounter, but you also got to budget for the unexpected things in life.

Great blog man. i agree you have to use bankroll. i use to never use it when i played on ftp back when usa was able to play on there.but i would with draw biweekly with out ever depositeing.id with draw 1000 from 1200. and play in there 40+4 sat with 11 tickets to the 216 buyin. i was good paly since ya didnt have to make final table and just need to build a stack and keep it.they only ran two of these a day on there. they also ran another sat with good pay outs.but when i went to vegas for 9 weeks i had to use it.so i totally understand how necessary it is.

Well some people even with there big enough bankrolls go into such a slump of bad beats and bad choices and dont drop down. Because they dont drop down they loose almost 90% of their bankroll this is why it is really key to drop down stakes when you lose big.

That's a good system, everybody needs to put some kind of limits on their bankroll so they dont go crazy with it

From the first game ive played for real money ive kept a record of what i paid and what my win or loss was. ive found that it keeps me from deceiving my self as to whether im winning or losing. as to the brm part of it, im a big nit also. but i generally play smaller field tourneys, added money forums mostly. these are getting harder to find since black friday, but they are still out there and well worth searching for.

BRM has always been my downfall since Black Friday because i have yet to find somewhere that i can recover my loses back as quick as i can on ub!

Welll BRM was not as important for me on UB as i was winning mostly everythng and was unlucky to go a day where i lost money.

When I began (along with many others I'm sure) I had terrible BRM, now that I've started to use good BRM i've found i've played better, and bounce back from bad beats better as well
