How To Play AK

AK is a hand that still gives me trouble at the table. I know it is a powerful hand, but it is an underdog to every PP (well a slight underdog). I stopped calling all in with this pre vs most opponents, since many aren't shoving weaker aces anymore. Occasionally vs a really dumb player I will call their all in, especiially when I have them covered since maybe they showed up with A10-AQ. I think most of AKs value comes from fold equity. So I want to raise with it but I am not looking for a call. Since AK plays best down to the river, the raise I tend to do most often is all in. I think this is obvious however since most players play it the same way. Do you ever 3bet or 4bet AK without going all in? How does position and stack impact your decision. Any advice on playing AK?

Yeah I don't play AK confidently, especially out of position. if you don't hit a pair on the flop, what do you do?

Play this hand with caution deep stacked and super aggressive short stacked. A/K is a great starting hand, but it is also the most overplayed hand. People don't like to fold any ace let alone A/K.I play it according to my stack size, position, number of players in the pot already, and my opponents stack size. Lets say we have 100 bb and our opponent has 25 bb. I'm going to try to get this in here, because there is a good chance I will get called by weaker ace. Now lets say he has the same 100 bb. I don't want to get this in here, because the absolute best you can hope for is probably the same hand or a race vs QQ or JJ vs any good player. I 3 bet A/K, but this also depends on my opponent, table image, etc. If you opponent is going to fold all hands you own this just isn't a good idea. Now if you think this guy is a fish and he is going to call you with a weaker ace and then pay off on all streets with that weaker ace go for it. However, you need to think about your position as well. If you aren't in position you may want to 3 bet hard and try to take it down. You also may want to 3 bet it to isolate, especially if there is already others in the pot or call stations behind you. 3 betting will scare a lot of players even though they may call you, they will simply check fold a lot of flops to you.

And I make this problem AK, indeed in most cases all in one game, but when I met my situation, I fold, how the game works so I go, if asked before the flop all in and I AK all in, too. But if you see the flop then I think you may have enemies, what chances I have and sometimes fold

I rarely ever like to go all-in pre flop...it is just too much of a coin flip...Typically I like to raise so that marginal hands will fold out...A lot of how you play it depends on your read on your opponent...sometimes you have to fold it if you don't hit the flop...or semi-bluff if you get a draw or you think your opponent will fold.

I think everyone should read onedesperatebets response here. It is really good and helpful. AK is the most overplayed hand in hold em for sure, that was one of the first things I learned in this game. But for some reason I still find myself overplaying. I noticed that in a lot of tournies I have gone deep in, I made some really good folds with AK preflop. I like the idea of playing it cautiously when deepstacked and aggressively when shortstacked or when your isolated opponent is shortstacked. Thanks for the responses guys, especially onedesperatebet (the champ of the first winter series event).

I tell you what is think ak is alot tougher to play than small or middle pair, the latter, is you dont hit on the flop you can get away from it, ak is so temping depending on the flop to continue, i hate the hand too.

Going all in early and then folding this hand late is totally wrong in my opinion. You should "Almost" never fold this hand once the blinds have gotten bigger. And to go all in early with this hand is a lot worse move then to do it late. Odds of you getting called off by a worse ace early in a tourney aren't that good unless you are at a table full of fish.

I think you mainly need to keep in mind that the value of A-K is generally pre-flop.

U should play aggressive in short stack and very conservative in deep stack, but i should say ace king is a good hand to bluff in position and continue bet,but very bad hand out of position

This was my play with AK just a few mins ago

I'm in BB with AK spade over 22k chipstake..blinds 400/800 I raise to 2k folded around to SB him with less then 5k so he shoves his pp 4's..needless to say all red board with not an A or K in sight. sighs . woe is me !

If you are deepstacked do you 3bet this hand? How does it vary if you are in position verses out of position? Lets say you are in the blinds and it limps around. Is a raise appropriate? I like the idea of playing conservatively when deepstacked and aggro when shortstacked. I also agree it is pretty silly to get this hand all in early in a tourney. Since you are probably deepstacked then anyhow. Most of AKs value seems like it comes from preflop, fld equity, and seeing it down to the river.

It makes me laugh when people say oh I dont call allins with AK,I fold when im outta position, bla bla bl...99.9% of players even the pros never and I mean never fold AK,wether they are big stacked or short stacked,in position, outta position...THE most over played hand ever in the history of holdem poker bar none!!!!

I hate Ak I know so many love it, its a pet peeve of mine, good when your short sometimes but they say you should always raise with it, but so many go all in with it and I would much rather have a pocket pair, if you get called going all in and it doesnt hit then where are you, oh right out of the tourney hmmm.

Ak in the first stages of the tournament is not that great...but is a strog hand if u get someone is a pot that has A-x...and hopffly he never hit his second card...i like to play k in the late stages of the tournament...sometimes i rase x3 or if my stak is not that great I go all inn.,

you could cbet cuz you've taken initiative preflop. You could CRAI. 'it depends'
Poker (as you know) is not a black & white game. It's dependent upon many different factors.

I'd like to give an answer to OP's question here but to be honest it would be a few pages long.

AK is a hand with many possibilities, pair of water, KK, a straight A, full house, flush. Is a strong arm and in 90% all in, from what I noticed when I play, all in is a pair or AK, AQ, KQ, talk before the flop. On this bet most players. Normally if you can see every flop then adopt our strategy
