Playing a set

Im always looking for an edge came across this

Sets are the bread and butter of poker players. I can’t think of much else that feels better than flopping a set against someone’s big pair and ruining that person’s day. If you open up Poker Tracker and look at your stats the odds are that sets make the most money out of all your hands. Sets really treat us poker players well, so it’s important to make sure we return the favor and treat them just as well.
Slow Playing MistakesThe biggest mistake people make with sets is slow playing them when it’s not appropriate to do so. Even though sets make the most money for us, they are far from invincible. Straights, flushes and the occasional higher set are always out there waiting to snatch that pot right up out of your hands.
It’s OK to slow play sets in certain situations, just not all the time. First of all, you want to protect that nice little set that’s treated you so well over the years. By slow playing it needlessly, you’re just throwing that little guy out to the wolves to fend for himself. It’s just dangerous! There are straights and flushes waiting around every corner to pop out and devour your set.
On top of that, there’s no point in slow playing a set if you’re up against someone with a draw. If you wait until the river to bet, the person you’re up against has either hit the draw or missed it. That sounds obvious but think about it: what good is a bet going to do on the river if your opponent has already either hit his draw or missed it? You’re either getting called by a better hand or causing the opponent to fold.

I've always treated my sets well, a little wine, some dinner, maybe a movie afterwards. Nice post and some really good advice.

Thats some good advice but for me it seem's no matter how I play them I always seem to get out drawn by a calling station that has one out and seem's to hit it. Sometime's I think their software didn't come with a fold botton and if it did they sure as heck don't know what it's for. I guess thats just the freeroll life...lol. Or the set over set situation seem's to get me also. But playing them fast is best no matter what the outcome is I guess.

Absolutely. Chances of hitting a set on the flop is 1 out of 8. No better feeling than hitting a set of 8s on an AK8 board

I could not agree more with your thoughts on this. I always have a laugh to myself when someone loses with a set and then calls the other player a fish or worse because they hit a straight or a flush. Of course you are going to get calls from players on straight or flush draws or top pair and sometimes they are going to hit. You need to be able to read this and fold if necessary.

I love hitting sets , especially a higher set . I do believe that sets make the most money out of all your hands . I would very rarely slow play a set because there always appears to be a straight or a flush draw after a flop , but definitely after the turn . If there is a chance of a straight or flush or a higher set , you need to be able to read this & you can be certain that one of your opponents has the cards to make it happen so you have to bet it or fold it . Thank you Ed for another great read , keep them coming !
