Thats a very tough hand, when i get to a new table.. i usually like to make smaller bets until i get a good read on the players espcially blind on blind.. alot of players will make plays at you in these situations, my advice would be to get settled in more, make reads, and always take notes!

Short-stacked, I would actually considering shoving after flop there...the only thing you would have to worry about is if they have a pocket pair (hopefully they don't have an 8). But if you let the hand go on, chances are the next card will be higher than a 5, and now your pair of 5s look worse and worse.
