Robert Baguley, a retired landlord from Leicestershire, has won the UK Ireland Poker Tour's Nottingham event after beating a monster field of 1,625 players. Baguley cashed in £200,400 for his triumph.
The UK Ireland Poker Tour broke yet another record last night, as retired landlord Robert Baguley won the biggest event ever to be played on the tour at the Dusk till Dawn
poker club in Nottingham.
Leading up to the event, The Dusk till Dawn club had helped boost the expectations by bluntly putting up a £1 million guaranteed prize pool, by far the biggest for any UKIPT tournament in history.
The strategy paid off and a full 1,625 players signed up to create the largest field ever in a
PokerStars sponsored event and bring the total prize pool to a record £1.1 million.
Following six days of play a final table was set, but for Bugaley there was still a long way to go as he entered the table last in chips.
Baguley, who had qualified for the event for just £100, nonetheless put on an impressive display and eventually made it to heads-up play against favorite Iqbal Ahmad.
Ahmad had been topping the counts since Day 2 of the event, but surprisingly failed to finish off his opponent once the final went underway.
Instead, Baguley took over the lead and kept applying pressure until he had achieved the unlikely victory.

A regular of the Dusk till Dawn poker club and normally to be found in £20 buy-in tournaments, the pensioner showed to be overwhelmed by the win and the accompanying £200,400 first prize cheque.
"I can't even think a the moment, I'm fuzzy headed," he told the
PokerStars Blog.
"I've been concentrating so hard on the poker," he added as he received the UKIPT trophy and lined up for his winner's photo shoot.
Runner-up Ahmad earned a consolation prize of £125,000 for coming in second, which remarkably is still a bigger cash than UK pro Gareth Walker took home for winning the event last year.
The next event on the tour's calendar will now be the UKIPT Dublin, which will be played at the CityWest venue from May 17 to 21 with a £250,000 guarantee and a €700+€70 buy-in.
