Chilipoker.fr is the latest online poker room to close down after facing increasing difficulties in the French market to operate a profitable business. The company reassures that all player funds will remain safe.
Chilipoker.fr is living its last days and will close down for good "within the next couple of weeks", the poker room's parent company has confirmed to French newspaper
La Tribune.
The closure of Chilipoker.fr has been rumored for more than a month in the French iGaming environment, but was not confirmed officially before today.
The confirmation came from parent company Iliad's Director of Finance and Development, Thomas Reynard, who cited financial troubles as the reason behind the decision to close up shop.
"This is not the way we like to do business. The competitive environment and the taxation of online games does not bring about new players or allow us to operate viably," Reynard said.
His statements reflect the increasing troubles for Iliad Gaming, who have been struggling with red numbers for years already.
According to reports, the company may have lost as much as €4 million over the past two years of operation.
The case highlights the problems faced by many French iGaming companies, who struggle with decreasing player numbers and declines in traffic.
A host of top online gaming companies have been fighting big deficits in recent years, including giants like BetClick and the Everest Group.
According to Mr. Reynard, players will not have to worry about their funds, as all customers will be refunded in full as part of the closing-down process.
The closure is restricted to Chilipoker's French branch, and will reportedly not affect
Chilipoker.com players.
