Greg Raymer closing in on Heartland Poker Tour title
The Heartland Poker Tour is hosting its first tournament after the Federated Sports + Gaming bankruptcy, taking place at the Route 66 Casino Hotel in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
The New Mexico event follows a turbulent period for the tour's organizers after it was sold to Pinnacle Entertainment as part of the bankrupt FS+G assets.
For a short period after the sale, it remained unclear whether or not the tour would make it back to continue its circuit of popular events, but it now seems that it is indeed back for good.
The Route 66 event saw a host of local players sign up for the $1,650 Main Event, followed by a number of better known stars.
One of these, 2004 WSOP Main Event champion Greg Raymer, has done so well that he is now the chip leader as the events enters its six-player final table.
Raymer has managed to collect 1,081,000 chips, which is enough to put him comfortably ahead of number two, Allan Hedin, who has 985,000.
Third is Steven Carruthers with 697,000, fourth is Benjie Benavidez with 567,000 and fifth is Robert Crawford with 371,000. Finally, Scott Dougherty is the short stack in sixth place with 234,000.
The final table will be played tonight, and a win could mean the first big title for Raymer since his 2004 WSOP win, worth $5 million.
Since then, Raymer has managed to pick up a large number of small and big results, giving "The Fossilman" more than $7 million in lifetime earnings.
