Jason Mercier wins Bellagio High Roller for $683,767
Jason Mercier can add another large tournament score to his list of career achievements. Mercier won the WPT's $100,000 High Roller event at the Bellagio, taking home a $683,767 prize.
Jason Mercier on Sunday added yet another big achievement to his career credentials as he took home the win in the prestigious WPT $100,000 High Roller Event at the Bellagio in Las Vegas.

Mercier entered the expensive tournament late, casually announcing that he "might as well win this one," before sitting down with players like Daniel Negreanu, Matt Waxman, Erik Seidel, Ben Lamb, Dan Shak, Cary Katz, Justin Bonomo and Tom Marchese.

Fellow Team PokerStars pro Daniel Negreanu also enjoyed a good run in the tournament, but finished just outside the money in eighth place, as his king-eight fell short to Isaac Haxton's king-nine.

Instead, Marchese, Roger Sippl, Justin Smith, Isaac Haxton, David Sands and Mercier all made it into the money and once the five-player final table was set, all players were secured at least $192,960.

The final cash prizes were calculated in split between Mercier, Haxton and Sands, based on the size of the players' stacks at that time.

Mercier here negotiated a $683,767 prize based on his 3.36 million chips, which at that point was only enough for second place.

However, soon after the deal was struck, Haxton was eliminated in third, and Mercier moved on to overcome his last opponent in David Sands.

This happened as his pocket fives cracked Sands' pocket aces all-in preflop, sending the title and the trophy to Mercier.

With the latest result, Mercier's live winnings reached almost $7.5 million, placing him as around 30th on the all-time money list.

The tournament was the first ever to be played with a $100,000 buy-in on the World Poker Tour. Another identical event is planned to take place around the WPT World Championship in Las Vegas in May.

Now that respect when you have 2nd place chips and still get that big of a cut in a deal. aces cracked by 5s must be good to run great.
