mjw006 is a Professional HUSNG'er from Newcastle, Australia. He has been playing poker both live and online for the past 5 years, spreading his time across all the games (Tournies, Cash, and obviously SNG's). He has been playing professionally since January 2009 and has continued to both move up through the stakes, and improve himself as a player consistently.
It has been about 6 months since I've really grinded out some husng sessions, so it has been a real change for me the past few days where I have played predominantly husng's. I feel like the game has changed so much in the past 5-6 months and that I am seriously lacking some practice. The biggest change in my eyes is just the fish, they will float, 3bet 30%, c/r bluff turns, and all other types of aggressive shit I'm not used to seeing from fish that often. My sample size is small, so perhaps I am wrong as an overall assessment, but from what I have seen in the past few days the fish have definitely become much more tricky to play against overall. I don't mean that I don't think I am +ev, or that their strategies aren't hugely exploitable, it's just a different dynamic to what I have been used to in the past. I remember when I first started grinding husng's full-time... You could legit raise pre and cbet and it was almost always +ev in itself as a core strategy. That will still be the case sometimes, but it seems to be the minority and you certainly have to have different dimensions to your game.It has been an eye-opener for me and I probably need to keep a little more up to date with the trends of the current game a little better.
It has been a nice little break from the daily MTT grind I guess. The past 2 weeks in MTT's have been a little on the rough side overall and with everything else going on in my life at the moment I thought a couple of slower days where I could pop in and out of games as I pleased would work well for me. That is probably the thing I miss most about grinding husng's; the freedom to play or stop whenever you need and just come back and fire it up again. Once I settle in for an mtt session I am in it for the long haul and don't really get any breaks in there or time to get other things done. The past few days have been a nice change and allowed me to work on some other things, but it is back to the mtt grind tomorrow and preparing myself for the Sunday grind once again.
I feel like I have been so lazy with my grinding this week but there is just so much stuff going on. I have recorded some mtt videos for two separate sites which should be released shortly, and I have also taken on my first mtt student. It was a very satisfying start to my MTT coaching career actually... The guy I have taken on has a background in HU cash, but has been trying to transition into MTT's for the past couple of months. He was yet to make a Final Table in anything even though he had quite a few deep runs (and quite a few 10ths =P), but after we did our first session yesterday he went ahead and booked two final tables today (3rd in a $27KO b/a and 2nd in the Daily $55/27.5k gtd). Obviously variance is a factor here, but nonetheless it is satisfying for him to feel better about his game and instantly have results. That is the most rewarding part about coaching for me... Seeing the people you teach actually succeed.
Final thing to note is that I will tomorrow be selecting the first weekly winner in my free coaching competition (
http://forumserver.twoplustwo.com/185/heads-up-sng/mjw006-sells-out-free...). I have had some really good entries in the first week (Australian Culture) and look forward to picking the best one and getting the free leakfinder up on husng.com. A good friend of mine and high stakes husng beast, OLD TIME GIN, has also thrown his hat in the ring and has offered an hour of free coaching to each winner which is obviously a nice little bit of value added. Next week the theme of the week will be Australian Wildlife, so be sure to get involved and have the chance at a free leakfinder video or even one of two free Premium Subscriptions to HUSNG.com that I am giving away at the end of the four week period.
Will leave it at that for now. Have had a big day of grinding and visiting family so need to get some rest to prepare for my return to the MTT grind tomorrow! I hope you guys are all doing great!
Matt
