Can there be an advantage to "sitting out" at any stage of a MTT? If yes, please comment?

I voted "NO" and here's why:
  • Really, it just means that you're going to fold every hand automatically. If you'd be willing to sit out, why not just tighten up your play, instead?
  • If you sit out in the beginning thinking that you'll just avoid the "donks," this is absolutely absurd. Donks will be donks, and some will make it to the final stages of the tournament anyway.
  • If you "sit out" and don't keep observing the table, what purpose does this serve? You aren't able to get reads off your opponents and their styles of play, and you simply "blind out" some chips and fold hands that are well worth playing and winning with the majority of the time.
  • Instead of sitting out in the bubble, why don't you just tighten up your play immensely if you're shortstacked and only play premium pockets. Let's say you're 21st and Top 20 get paid. Sitting out, you hope that somebody makes a mistake and goes allin and loses (putting you in the money), but by doing this, you risk the possibility of autofolding AA and KK --> premium hands that you'd WANT to shove at that time anyway. Don't "sit out"; just tighten up.
Overall, sitting out doesn't accomplish too much. If you're trying to get reads on your opponents WHILE you're sitting out, that may be a different story, but instead, why don't you just tighten up your play a bit? As a final thought, to get ITM in a MTT, you have to build your chip stack massively and take a few gambles throughout. Sitting out doesn't do this at all.

I voted yes just simply because I feel like if you already have made the money for say a tournament where you would earn a ticket just like everyone else it makes no sense to play and risk busting.

NO, unless your intentions are to sit out for a blind level If you think you would gain enough strength during the break to play better poker, then it is probably profitable. Why not go to toilet, grab a snack and then hurry back to the computer? Don't need 5 minutes for that.

Some people say things on here that arent very true,I`ve seen members in tournys that get very low and sit out,or very high in chips and sit out,I`m guessin cause they got mad and never came back to the table...when your up a considerable amount of chips in a tourny and say top 9 get paid why would you risk your human emotions and continue playing when you assured of making the money ...poker is a game of decete and some people won`t speak the truth no matter what!

Lol, sure i will vote no because if i can play a tournament i will play, in other condition i can only sit out or unregister before the start of this tournament. It is a stupid ideea to sit out when you are in a tournament and watching the table and waiting for hands to play.It is obvious for other guys what you do and that will cost you in short time.

I dont think there is any advantage to sitting out either!!! wasting your blinds, and any good hands that u may have!! I think sitting out is sorta a weenie to make ITM! I have seen at some of the tourneys - not much - but have seen it!

I see players sit out all the time when the get big stacks. It does not make much sense to me. It only tells me that they are not comfortable with keeping stacks.
