A charity event is generally speaking just an event in which the profits will go to a charitable cause. At my old university, the local poker club would for instance raise money for breast cancer once a month by arranging a tournament where 50% of all of the buy-ins went to cancer research. Prizes weren't too big, but it was a lot of fun, and of course you feel great supporting a good cause by playing poker!
