Detroit Lions at Chicago Bears

Detroit Lions at Chicago Bears

Continuing on with my strategy of betting last season’s preseason expectations as opposed to actual results, today I’ve elected to focus my attention on a matchup that should have the average bettor grossly undervaluing the favourite.

That’s because after widely being considered a real contender, the Chicago Bears – who ESPN had ranked 7th (!!!) on their preseason power rankings, put up a dud of a season, seeing their defensive numbers return to earth after some league-leading numbers a season earlier.

Meanwhile, although Detroit did crash and burn to a 3-12-1 record last season, most casual fans will likely focus on Stafford’s 2-0-1 record to start the season and say his injury was the reason the Lions flamed out, while forgetting to mention he went 1-4 before doing so. And with ESPN having ranked Detroit 24th in their preseason power rankings while giving them only a 17% chance to make the playoffs, it seems clear that Madden developers would have likely had these two teams on opposite ends of the spectrum, a theory supported by the fact that Chicago boasts 15 players with a rating of 80 or higher, including a perfect 99 for Khalil Mack while Detroit only has 8 such players, capping out with Damon Harrison’s 95. In fact, when looking solely on top-tier talent (85 or higher rating), Chicago’s roster outpaces Detroit’s by an 8-4 margin.

For these reasons, I’ll be backing Da Bears in the hopes that Trubisky finally plays up to expectations, even if it’s only virtually.

That’s all for today, stay safe out in there and, as always, remember to never bet more than you can afford to lose.
