In a triumph 15 years in the making, a fixture here in Lake Tahoe, Lee Markholt has won Event #18: $400 Double Stack Closer for his first Hendon Mob-recognized win since 2010.
The Reno-Tahoe area is special to Markholt, whose largest-ever win for just under $500,000 came in Reno in 2008.
His first-ever Hendon recognized tournament win actually came here in Lake Tahoe at an event called the "King of the Hill" in a $250 Limit Hold 'em event when he defeated a player known only as "Omaha Bob" heads-up for $5,440.
So the question had to be asked: Who the hell is Omaha Bob?
Unfortunately, while who he beat heads-up almost 35 years ago wasn't something Markholt could recall, he did have stories and jokes about that time.
(Laughing) "You know, I don't even remember. I remember I was here for that tournament, and they had a team event. A friend of mine created a team from some of us back home, and he asked me to be on the team, and I said, 'Yeah, yeah, I'll do that.'
Continuing, Markholt said, "It's been so long ago. I did have some wins before that, though. That was probably my first first-place win, but I know I had some cashes prior to that, so I predate The Hendon Mob."
He may not remember "Omaha Bob," but hopefully Markholt will have fond memories of his first Circuit ring here tonight when he beat "Alaska Jordan" (not his actual nickname that we know of, but we're going with it tonight), a fellow ring winner from here in Lake Tahoe last year.
