The Major League Baseball season finally gets underway tonight and while it seems very strange to say that in late July, fans and bettors alike are very excited.
Another person who is very excited is Los Angeles Dodgers’ outfielder Mookie Betts. He just signed a long-term extension that is reportedly for 12 years and $365 Million.
Betts is a top-5 positional player in the game as a 5-tool guy (Power, Average, Speed, Glove, Arm). He was reportedly looking for over $400 million when he was in earlier contracts talks with Boston. That prompted the Red Sox to trade him to the West Coast back in February.
Betts is a huge piece for Los Angeles going forward. They’ve done a great job in roster building, adding young talent while maintaining the salary flexibility to sign a player of this caliber.
Here’s a quote from Dodgers’ president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman on the signing (courtesy mlb.blogs.com).
“Today’s obviously a very exciting day for the Dodgers organization as well as all our incredible fans. I think when you’re making an investment of this magnitude, you’re not just betting on the player’s ability — you’re also betting on the person. With that, we couldn’t be more comfortable to make that bet than on Mookie Betts.”
MLB odds are up for the two games tonight.
The first game is the defending-champ Washington Nationals hosting the New York Yankees at 7pm ET. The pitching matchup is Gerrit Cole (his first Yankees start) against Max Scherzer.
The second game at 10pm ET is an NL West matchup of the San Francisco Giants vs Betts and the Dodgers. The pitching matchup is Johnny Cueto vs. Clayton Kershaw.
