The NFL is preparing to make a huge investment to stop systemic racism
The NFL seems to have understood the message sent in a recent video made by several players in light of the protests against racism and police violence and is now doing something else for the cause. The NFL announced yesterday a ten-year $250 million fund that, according to the release, is to “combat systemic racism and support the battle against the ongoing and historic injustices faced by African-Americans.”
The statement added, “The NFL and our clubs will continue to work collaboratively with NFL players to support programs to address criminal justice reform, police reforms, and economic and educational advancement.” Just last week, commissioner Roger Goodell issued a video response video after players asked the league to condemn racism and take accountability for not listening to them first. “I personally protest with you and want to be a part of the much-needed change in this country,” Goodell said in a video last Friday. “We are listening, I am listening, and I will be reaching out to players who have raised their voices, and others on how we can move forward together for a better and more united NFL family.”
That was only the first step the NFL took to be part of the change. In addition to this video response, the football league announced a financial commitment to use its media power and influence, including the NFL Network, to raise awareness and promote better education of social justice issues. Even before today’s announcement, the NFL had already donated $44 million to its social justice programs to fund at least 20 local grassroots organizations identified by players and former players
