WSOP Event #5: Omaha Hi-Lo 8 or Better

Event #5 of the 2021 WSOP is the $1500 Omaha Hi-Lo 8 or Better tournament. This three-day Omaha Hi-Lo 8 or Better event started on October 1. Derek McMaster was the defending champion. McMaster outlasted a field of 853 entrants in 2019 to win his first WSOP bracelet and the tournament’s first-place prize of $228,228.

The first three gold bracelets awarded by the WSOP in 2021 went to relative unknowns. By contrast, Connor Drinan is well known in the poker world, with more than $11 million in live tournament earnings. He lived up to his reputation with a standout performance during all three days of this event. Drinan finished Day 1 in seventh place among the field of 230 players, with 164,000 chips before he began his climb up the leader board on Day 2.

Drinan took home his first World Series of Poker bracelet in September 2020. For his performance that year, he took home the $10,000 WSOP Super MILLION$ event on GGPoker. About a year later, the player has now added another WSOP gold bracelet to his trophy case, with his win in the $1,500 Omaha Hi-Lo 8 or Better Event #5. He also took home the event’s biggest cash prize of $163,252 for his efforts.

The $1500 Omaha Hi-Lo event drew 905 players in 2017 and 911 players in 2018. The COVID-19 vaccination requirement in place at the 2021 WSOP affected attendance for this regular event compared to past years.
