One of the top poker sites in the world, 888poker, conducted some interesting research on the chances of getting lucky in life.
Much like poker, there is a luck factor attached to the game of life. Good and bad luck comes in various ways, sort of like how when you chase a flush in a big pot and hit your money card on the river, you were the beneficiary of good fortune. In real-life, having good luck could mean winning the lottery or receiving a seven-figure inheritance.
There are many ways for luck to be on your side throughout life's journey. 888poker crunched the numbers on some interesting forms of luck, starting with a dream occupation most people would die to land: a movie star. What are your chances of becoming the next Matt Damon? According to 888poker, about 1 in 11,500. So, it might be time to fire your acting coach, because you'd have a better shot at beating Phil Ivey in a heads-up match then one day starring on the big screen.
Since it's clear that you probably aren't going to win any Academy awards in your lifetime, perhaps your odds of winning an Olympic gold medal are higher, right? Sorry to burst your bubble again, but your chances of being the next Michael Phelps are around 1 in 662,000. The good news is that Phelps, who loves to play poker, isn't too skilled at poker, so there is one way you could beat him.
On the positive side of things, you are extremely unlikely to get struck by lightning, about 1 in 500,000. Or, the equivalent to flopping a royal flush in Texas hold'em.
Will you become the next Chris Moneymaker?
Winning a major poker tournament, like say the WSOP Main Event, would be a dream come true for just about any poker player. Not only would you win a ton of money ($8 million or more), but you'd also gain fame and notoriety around the poker community. Your chances of doing that are somewhere in the neighborhood of 1 in 7,500, depending on your skill level and the number of players signed up that specific year.

What would be even better than winning the Main Event? Winning the lottery, which often pays more than $100 million. The only problem is, your chances are only about 1 in 140 million to get that lucky.
One other way to get lucky is for your kids to fit into the highest IQ bracket in the world. A smart child will likely grow up to be successful, and possibly wealthy enough so that you won't have to win the lottery to retire comfortably. The odds on having a kid that is a genius is about 1 in 11,000. So, we're saying there's a chance.
