A potential ban on headphones at the poker table will be discussed at the next Poker TDA summit, with the idea already drawing a largely negative reaction from the poker community.
Matt Savage, tournament director and Poker TDA founder, said he would favor a ban after reports that camera-equipped Apple AirPods are in advanced testing.
According to tech outlet T3, these AirPods aren't built for image or video capture, but instead, "most of the application will involve supercharging the output from AI platforms. For example, the user could be facing something and ask for details about it."
What that means in practice remains unclear, but if players can use them to gain an advantage, it's a problem tournament operators may need to solve in the near future.
Poker's tech battle heats up
Many large poker tours, including the European Poker Tour, have already moved to ban placing electronic devices such as phones on the table. Headphones are allowed, although the WSOP restricts the use of all electronic devices from the final three tables onwards, with tournament staff able to enforce restrictions earlier if necessary.
As tech gets ever more advanced, the battle between operators and cheats will intensify.
Does that mean a future where headphones are banned and your only escape from players like Will Kassouf or Martin Kabrhel is a pair of old-fashioned earplugs?
That possibility came up in a conversation between Octopi CEO Victoria Livschitz and Savage.
And after another player pointed out that people wearing headphones slow down the game for everyone else, Livschitz announced she would go without headphones for the entire WSOP.
Not all poker players are against headphones being banned.
Seems simple to me, if the headphones are a threat to game integrity, ban them, but also strictly enforce the "excessive chatter" rule if there are any complaints at all (including from neighboring tables)

Poker players react to possible headphone ban
But most players aren't buying it. Here are some of the strongest reactions from poker Twitter.
way more important to ban covering face in multiple ways: face covered, scarf, sunglasses especially all at once. sunglasses can also have cameras. headphones seem like lowest priortiy of all topics imo. lots of people need music to play and stay calm for hours.

Idk what to do. Feels like moving towards no electronics at the table is an inevitability. But I really enjoy having headphones and my phone available. There’s been times where that’s what’s kept me at the table and not going outside to do deep breathing exercises.

Don’t… you… dare…

As a rec, I will just stop playing. Not sitting in silence or listening to dumbfucks at the table talk for 8 plus hours. It takes the game from fun and enjoyable to miserable.

If you want to torture pros in high rollers. Or at final tables maybe. But for a whole tourney. Im out
Hoping not. Already can’t stand most chatter at the table. Especially in tourn where you can be forced at a table 4hrs+. Noise cancel and music are a savior.

So we are going to be forced to sit at the table with the Martin Kabrels and Kasooufs with very little oversight, but let’s ban head phones. You are going to lose recs. Not gain them.

I think if more people saw what the new phones are doing with real time AI, they would support the headphone ban.

Seems like horrible idea. Playing 12 hours a day at some point it’s nice to turn on music and zone out. That would be kind of ridiculous…

there's a big difference between cheating by knowing other players holecards (extreme advantage 500%+ ROI), and cheating by playing optimal GTO (small 5-10% ROI advantage in higher buyin events) which sounds like what airpods could theoretically do. It's too much an…

Banning headphones would be ridiculous

Meanwhile, David Lappin – ever the forward thinker – has already come up with his solution.
