Lexy Gavin-Mather is a popular WSOP vlogger, professional player, accomplished author, and content creator.
What kind of prep are you doing for the WSOP this summer?
I study a lot before the series. I make sure to eat a clean, healthy diet and also do a lot of yoga, meditation, and exercise. I want to make sure that my physical and mental health are taken care of before the WSOP begins.
Do you have any healthy diet tips you can share?
I've tried it all. I've tried going vegan and keto and even tried a fruitarian diet, where I was only eating fruit. Now I really believe in balance – I eat meat and a lot of protein and eliminate as many processed foods as I can.
Do you have any advice to help foster a positive, ongoing mindset?
I'm a Christian, and I like to pray a lot. I'm very blessed, and I’m very close to family.
I try to put things in perspective. I think the morning meditation/prayer I do really helps. Of course, I have ups and downs, especially with poker, which is a very emotional sport. I do have some bad days as well. I really believe in manifestation and in telling myself, "Today's going to be a great day."
Big score in the Bahamas
What's been the most exciting thing to happen for you in poker since last year’s WSOP?
I'd say it was my biggest score in the Bahamas [at WSOP Paradise]. I made Day 3 of the $25K Super Main Event on one bullet, and I won $70,000 plus the $25,000 parlay that they had. I took home 95K profit thanks to the vlogger program as well.
On a deep run like that, what sort of advice do you get from your husband?
[Laughs] He’s always telling me to get off my phone. But that's a tough thing for me because I'm a content creator. I like to update everyone, check the comments, and all that stuff. Bad advice? I can’t think of anything.
Does he ever try to give you strategy advice?
Yes, he does. I actually value the strategy advice he gives me because he’s a lot better than I am at the table. He’s a private investigator and incredible at reading players.
What is one strategy leak you see often during the WSOP from recreationals?
They continuation-bet way too frequently. Sometimes, checking is the right way to go.
What impact do you think the WSOP’s partnership with ESPN will have on the Main Event?
I think it's going to help tremendously. It's fantastic that they're bringing it back to ESPN and removing the paywall for viewers. I also think it's great that they're going to stream every event on YouTube, which is really fun for people to watch.
