Imagine you're in the midst of an online poker session. While you play, you toss a movie on in the background. Then, seemingly out of nowhere, Daniel Negreanu appears onscreen for a moment or two. You might do a double take and wonder if your eyes deceived you. Or, if there's an up-and-coming actor out there with an uncanny resemblance to Negreanu.
Twitter/X user Jeff Whitmire knew exactly what he was seeing when Negreanu popped up in a movie he was watching – but it was still an unexpected surprise.
If you take a look at Negreanu's IMDB page, you'll see multiple appearances as an actor and a couple others as a producer. While Negreanu is undoubtedly one of the poker world's most famous names, the list of credits to his name begs the question: how does he find himself in these movies? Thankfully, in a recent Reddit Ask Me Anything thread, Negreanu provided the answers.
Negreanu the actor
In response to a question about his cameo in Detention (2011), Negreanu explained that most of his silver screen appearances have come courtesy of director Joseph Kahn.
"He is a famous music video director," Negreanu wrote. "And I met him when shooting a poker campaign with him and we became friendly and so I've invested in his movies."
Negreanu's bet on Kahn has paid dividends. Perhaps not literally, but in exchange for the funding Negreanu has appeared in many of Kahn's projects.
Aside from Detention, Negreanu has made cameo appearances in Lucky You (2007), The Grand (2007), X-Men Origins: Wolverine (2009), Mr. D (2013), Private Eyes (2016), and Bodied (2017).
While it's not listed on his IMDB page, the movie that Whitmire saw Negreanu in is a horror film titled Ick (2024).
