As established last week, Garrett Adelstein's debut appearance on PokerGO's No Gamble, No Future has been a complete and total misfire. Through the first six episodes of the season, Adelstein can't catch a break. After starting Episode 5 in a half-million-dollar hole, his attempts to dig himself out only served to worsen his situation.
In Episode 6, Adelstein's fortunes looked to be improving, but then he learned a lesson the hard way and his earlier luck was for naught.
'Truly unbelievable'
In the first of two consequential hands for Adelstein, he raised to $4,000 and faced a three-bet to $15,000 from Justin Gavri and his
. When the action folded back around to him, Adelstein made the call and watched on as the dealer spread the
flop. Gavri continued for $12,000 when checked to and Adelstein raised to $31,000 without skipping a beat.
Gavri moved all-in over the top and Adelstein quickly called. With the cards on their backs and $263,200 in the middle, Gavri wanted to run two turns and rivers. On the first runout, the turn was a welcome sight for Adelstein as he vaulted into the lead with trips. Gavri had two outs to boat up, but the
river wasn't the card he needed.
"Oh my god, I put my money in bad so many times over the past two days," Adelstein told the table after getting lucky. "It is truly unbelievable."
Then, the turn materialized on the second runout and Adelstein's words took on a new light.
"Fair enough, I guess," Gavri said as he took to his feet and watched the river seal his fate.
Adelstein's $721,000 lesson
With the $1,600 straddle in play, Shawn Madden raised to $5,000 and picked up one caller in the form of Adelstein's
. On the
flop, Madden continued for $7,000 and Adelstein came along with his queen-high and potential backdoor draws. Madden fired again, this time for $15,000, on the
turn. After a few moments of thought, Adelstein dropped a $55,000 raise across the betting line.
Madden wasn't ready to surrender his cards just yet and made the call. With $136,400 in the middle, the river yielded a check from Madden. Adelstein eyed up his opponent's remaining stack and calmly slid forward a stack of $5,000 chips, announcing all-in to the dealer as he did. Madden didn't like it at all, but he didn't instantly fold.
After thinking for more than two minutes, Madden slammed down a stack of chips for a call – and was shown the good news as Adelstein quickly revealed his queen-high bluff. Adelstein, to his credit, fist bumped Madden as soon as he saw the winning hand. While the table endured the shock of the hero call, Madden quietly dragged in the $721,000 pot.
"I did not think you were calling," Andrew Robl said. "I know exactly what Garrett was thinking, he was like 'Shawn wants to get out of here with his winnings,' but he underestimated the size of your balls."
"I'm changing my sayings: it's not never bluff a billionaire, it's never bluff a cowboy," Robl continued.
