Ryan Fee crossed the line of decency with his recent troll of Daniel Negreanu, in my opinion. Mocking a player who just lost $1.2 million in a heads-up poker match isn't cool.
Fee purchased a brand new Lamborghini with his winnings from the Doug Polk vs. Daniel Negreanu match. How he won that money is unknown publicly. He either had a piece of Polk's action or he bet heavily on Polk to win.
Either way, there's certainly nothing wrong with making a big purchase such as a $200,000 Lambo after hitting it big. But he should have stopped there. Instead, he added some custom license plates that read, "TYDNEGS," mocking Negreanu.
On a trolling scale from 1 to 10, this is definitely a 10/10. But on a decency scale from 1 to 10, this is about a -300. If you're in your 30's, and Ryan Fee is, and trolling others, especially those who just lost $1.2 million, is your game, it's probably time to grow up.
I get it that Negreanu losing $1.2 million is like the average poker player losing $100 in a $1/$2 game. But that's still crossing the line. If you want to talk some trash on social media, go for it. Spend a day bragging to your Twitter followers how much wealthier you became because of Polk's win. And then move on with your life.
Let bygones be bygones
Ryan Fee is a close friend of Doug Polk's. He's also a co-owner with Polk of the Upswing Poker training site. Considering his relationship with Polk, a long-time rival of Negreanu's, it's no surprise he has it in for "DNegs."
Late in the match, back in January, Negreanu and Fee went at it on Twitter following Negreanu's $390,000 session win on Day 31.
Fee started it by bragging about Polk's $298,000 win during the previous session. He then escalated it the following session with the above tweet, to which Negreanu fired back in an equally immature way.
From then, things got even pettier and more childish. Fee responded with, "You have dumb scrub energy who’s still going to get blown out by the end of this thing," to which Negreanu said, "Maybe... but either way I’ll still be rich, have a hot ass wife, and a sausage that can satisfy! You on the other hand... dick napkin, tears, and a pinky dick that Bitcoin can’t fix."
Mind you, these are grown adults speaking publicly in this manner. While I understand the animosity between Fee and Negreanu, Fee should be better than to purchase those custom plates. That was crossing the line.
Polk and Negreanu feuded for years, but even Polk admitted he gained respect for his rival during the challenge. He hasn't even publicly trashed Negreanu since the match started, except for some reasonable criticism for his opponent during one session in which Negreanu slowed down the play by tanking.
So, why won't fee let bygones be bygones? I can't answer that because I don't personally know him. But it appears that Negreanu may have been onto something when he tweeted that Fee has "pinky d**k energy.
What did he even do?
Fee won money on the Polk vs. Negreanu match, and clearly it was a large sum of cash. That's all fine and dandy, but what exactly did he do to earn bragging rights?
How many hands did Fee play in that match? The answer is zero. He wasn't the one who dominated Negreanu in heads-up no-limit hold'em. He simply bet on Polk to win or had a piece of Polk's action.
Fee taunting Negreanu without playing a single hand in the challenge is like some dude living in his mom's basement trash talking LeBron James when he misses a potential game-winning shot.
Win with class, lose with class. Taunting a player who just lost $1.2 million is low class.
