San Jose, California police have arrested the second of two men wanted for the May 4 home invasion and armed robbery of a private poker game. 39-year-old Nicholas Boyd (center photo, above), was arrested last week after authorities located his whereabouts at a house in San Jose.
Boyd, along with Ankhkoa Ledo (photo at left, above), who was arrested in May, are accused of robbing what police described as a large poker game in the Hellyer neighborhood of San Jose's far southeast side.
According to a police statement, "Over 10 victims were inside of the residence playing poker, when two armed masked suspects smashed the rear sliding door and entered the residence. The suspect made the victims get on the floor and demanded money. One suspect struck a victim in the head with a firearm. The suspects forced one of the victims to retrieve money from a bedroom. The suspects fled the scene with stolen property and over $30,000 in cash. Officers arrived quickly and were able to contain at least one suspect.
"With the use of a police canine, suspect Ledo was taken into custody," the statement continued. "A search of the area yielded some of the stolen property and one of the firearms used in the incident."
Boyd, who was identified as the second suspect at that time, remained free until July 26, when his location became known to officers from the SJPD Covert Response Unit (CRU). When police arrived at the home where Boyd was present, he barricaded himself inside. According to the SJPD statement, Boyd tried to escape through an attic crawl space, but fell through the ceiling above a bathroom as shown at right, above. Boyd briefly continued his standoff by barracading himself inside the bathroom but surrendered to the officers a short while later.
The San Jose police also noted that they had to be cautious during the standoff with Boyd, due to two special-needs children also being present at the home. The two children were evacuated without incident as Boyd was placed under arrest.
Ledo and Boyd both face multiple charges from the May incident, including robbery, kidnapping, and assault with a deadly weapon.
