German pro Tobias Schwecht staged a late rally to deny Kannapong Thanarattrakul the WSOP Super Circuit Main Event title in London, after a final table that started slowly and exploded at the end. Schwect wins a career-best £480,000 with Thanarattrakul getting the runner-up prize of £305,000.
That won't be much consolation for the Thai player, though. He led from late on Day 3, all the way through Day 4's final table. Heads-up, he had a 4-1 chip lead, before two hands brought him crashing down.
The first saw him tank and make a big call with bottom pair, that was crushed by Schwecht's full house. He tried to get the chips back soon after with a big bluff on the river, only to run into another Schwecht full house. Thanarattrakul never recovered from this and the German won his first Circuit ring soon after.
Lewis and Moorman go deep
The £3,300 buy-in Super Circuit Main Event boasted 910 runners, including the likes of Viktor 'Isildur' Blom, Bertrand 'ElkY' Grospellier, Jack Salter, Chris Moorman and Toby Lewis. The latter two skipped the first two days of live play, qualifying direct for Day 3 online at GGPoker.
Both made deep runs, with Moorman eliminated in 18th and Lewis first out on the final table. We almost saw a 2023 WSOP Main Event final table reunion for Lewis and Scot Dean Hutchison. They finished 7th and 6th respectively in Las Vegas, and ended 9th and 15th in London.
The caliber of play was high throughout, but especially at the end. Both heads-up players had played the Triton Super High Roller Series that played out in the same venue as the WSOPC. Schwecht notched a then career best score of $254,000 in the Triton Main Event before besting that and winning his first WSOP Circuit ring on Sunday.
And he wasn't done then, either. Despite a gruelling grind in the Super Circuit Main Event, Schwecht hopped straight into the £10k Super High Roller, where he briefly threatened incredible back-to-back wins before going out in eighth and on the stone bubble.
Pedro Garagnani went on to beat Espen Jorstad to the ring in that event, winning £200,000, while Kuljinder Sidhu won the £5k High Roller for £125,000.
These events marked the end of a vibrant Super Circuit stop for the WSOP, which moves onto Tallinn in Estonia next (September 14-24).
