The ever-present lucky Macclesfield Town FC shirt proved its worth yet again yesterday as Dan Charlton took down the WSOP Circuit UK Main Event. A three-way deal saw the ‘Macc Lad’ take home £73,295, the coveted gold WSOP Circuit ring, and a seat in the WSOP Tournament of Champions.

Charlton, known online as "judgedredd13", wore the shirt every day during his deep run at the 2019 WSOP Main Event in Vegas (32nd for $261,430), and this week it was back on show at Dusk Till Dawn in Nottingham, playing host to the WSOP Circuit.

The £1,100 buy-in Main Event attracted 462 entries, created a £97,500 top prize and 71 paid spots. The bubble burst midway through Day 2 and by the end of that day, only 12 players would be returning to battle for the title. Some big names were in attendance, with the likes of Marcel Luske and Ivan Deyra cashing but unable to run any deeper.

Three-way deal works out for Charlton

Charlton found himself extremely short at one point, but recovered to make the final table, where the first blow was struck by the masked, hooded, sunglasses-wearing Gerges Issa, who felled George Constantin in ninth.

The remaining eight had sewn up five-figure scores, and Charlton’s resurgence continued as he cracked the kings of Patrice Brandt, eliminating him in eighth for £10,000.

Paul Allen did his bit to reduce the field – jacks accounted for Yannick Seabrook and then queens did for Charles Chatta who got his last in with tens.

An open-shove with A♣Q♣ accounted for Issa in fourth spot as Arian Hassankahani’s pocket nines held up. And suddenly it was time to talk numbers. A deal was struck that saw the podium trio playing for £9,700 and the ‘extras’ on offer.

Charlton then saw off Allen with a dominating ace-jack against queen-jack to take the Main Event heads-up.

The end came when Charlton, with a 2.5:1 chip lead, hit a dream flop.

Charlton: Q♦️️3♦️️
Hassankahani: A♦️️7

Flop: Q4♦️️3

When the 7♦️️ dropped on the turn, Hassankahani had second pair, top kicker and the K♦️️ river saw him face a check-all-in. Deep into the tank, Hassankahani eventually made the crying call only to receive the bad news that he was losing all along – the consolation was a £71,820 cash.

Charlton’s fifth cash of the year is his biggest outside that 2019 WSOP deep run and, remarkably, his first recorded win in 15 years of tournament play.
