Poker can feel overwhelming. There are so many scenarios, decisions, and branches in the game tree that most players don’t know where to start or what to prioritize.
Early in my career I learned something important: focus on the spots that come up the most. Those situations will always have the biggest impact on your win rate.
By focusing on the right things, it will elevate your game to the next level. This is one of the most important differences between winning players and losing players.
Focus on preflop
The core of the game starts preflop fundamentals.
A lot of players have major leaks in their preflop strategy. By focusing on those leaks and making sure you have a solid understanding of preflop scenarios, you immediately improve the foundation of your game.
Once your preflop game is strong, you can begin to focus on more advanced post flop strategy. That includes understanding how to play both in position and out of position and learning to break those situations down in the simplest way possible.
A common mistake players make is focusing on rare situations, like reviewing river decisions or asking whether they should have hero-called, folded, or bluffed.
Those decisions do matter. But they don’t matter nearly as much as the fundamentals that happen in almost every hand.
The next level
When you master the fundamentals, you put yourself on another level.
Only after you’ve truly built that baseline should you start focusing on the smaller details: the adjustments on flops, turns, and rivers that refine your decision-making.
Once those layers are added on top of strong fundamentals, you’ll see a real impact on your overall performance at the tables.
