The Super High Roller Bowl Europe at the Merit Hotel, Casino, and Spa in Cyprus has been delivering some great poker. So far we've cheered as Phil Ivey took down one event and Antanas "Tony G" Guoga took down another.
Today, we almost saw Ivey win his second event of the series when he made it to heads up play with Selahaddin Bedir. Unfortunately, Bedir's chip lead proved too great for the G.O.A.T. to beat and he had to settle for second place.
With Bedir and Ivey's entries, the total head count for the tourney was 52 players, making for a $2,600,000 prize pool.
Among the players who didn't make the money (top 8 players paid) were: Erik Seidel (32nd), Michael Addamo (28th), Stephen Chidwick (24th), Tony G (25th), David Peters (14th), and Paul Phua (11th).
The event’s $50k buy-in was a definite increase on the first three events, which cost $25k to enter. All this is building towards the $250,000 buy-in main event.
Beating Phil Ivey heads up
With blinds at 30,000-60,000 and a big-blind ante of 60,000, Bedir started heads-up play with a huge chip advantage. Bedir had 6.6 million in chips — three times Ivey's stack. Ivey also had just 20 big blinds to play with (1.2 million in chips) which hugely cut the degree to which he could exercise his skill edge.
Bedir did his best not to let Ivey get a chance to outplay him. Over and over, the chips went in pre-flop. Ivey couldn't catch a hand and his stack dwindled.
Twenty minutes into heads up play, Ivey found the K❤️J♣. He called Bedir's shove, putting 820,000 in chips into the middle. Bedir flipped over the A♣2♠ and the race was on.
The flop was an inconclusive 9♠6♦️2❤️. It offered no draws to speak of and improved Bedir's hand in the most meaningless way possible. It did not change the odds for Ivey.
The 8♠ on the turn burned Ivey's backdoor options and he was down to the three jacks and three kings remaining in the deck.
There was a hopeful flash of paint, but it proved to be the Q♠. Ivey went to the rail in second place to collect a check for $546,000. You can watch the whole final table on PokerGO.
