Triton Poker's Cyprus Special Edition series kicked off at the Merit Hotel and Casino in Cyprus this weekend. The series started off with a $50,000 no-limit hold'em 6-handed event.
Despite the nosebleed stakes, 82 players ponied up the cash making for a prize pool of $3,936,000 after rake.
The event attracted a host of poker royalty including Nick Petrangelo, Jake Schindler, Artur Martirosian, Daniel Dvoress, and Rob Yong. And that's just the players who busted with nothing.
Once the bubble broke, the final two tables starred Michael Addamo (11th - $99,000), Stephen Chidwick ($188,000 - 7th), Jason Koon ($307,000), and eventual winner Andras Nemeth (1st - $1,082,000).
The big guns
The big story of the day was Phil Ivey, making one of his increasingly frequent appearances.
Ivey skipped the WSOP, for what many suspect were vaccine-related reasons. But he was out in force on Sunday. Ivey made the final table, eventually busting in fourth place for $387,100.
His long-time high-stakes friend, colleague, and rival Daniel Negreanu initially gave the series a skip but appears to have been suffering from FOMO.
Negreanu tweeted his experience of watching the final table of Event #2: $100,000 8-max. He did nothing to hide his jealousy and just a few hours later he tweeted Josh Arieh.
"I can't take it," Negreanu wrote. "I gotta jump on a plane."
The stakes just went up again.
Event #2: $100,000 no limit hold'em 8-max kicked off in parallel with the $50k final table today, leaving just two more events in the Cyprus Special Edition Series.
These are numbered #3 and #5 because four is viewed by many as an unlucky number.
However, the high-stakes action won't be drying up once Event #5 is done. The series is running in tandem with Super High Roller Bowl, meaning there's plenty more action on its way.
