WSOP Event #43: DOUBLE STACK No-Limit Hold'em

Event #43 of the 2021 WSOP is the $1,000 DOUBLE STACK No-Limit Hold’em tournament. This five-day event had two opening days on October 22 and October 23, and then combined to play down to a winner from October 24-27. Players started the tournament with 40,000 chips and played with blind levels of 60 minutes throughout.

The bracelet for the Double Stack went to new father and first-time bracelet winner Anthony Denove.

Denove outlasted 3,991 other entrants to win the event. Thanks to an impressive performance and an astounding mix of luck and skill, he came away with the first place prize of $446,983. Denove is most often a cash game player, but this may signify a turning point in his career.

Despite Denove's first place showing in this event, the big story was Jeff Platt. Platt made an amazing run, making it to 4th place and walking with $160,662. Platt has worked as a commentator for the WSOP (among other poker shows). It’s nice to see him set the microphone on a shelf, roll up his sleeves, and do well.

The prize pool reached $3,551,990 with nearly 4,000 players at the baize.

The double-stack format gave the event has twice the usual 20,000 starting stack for this type of event. This is different from another popular “double stack” format where each player gets a second add-on/rebuy stack and can add it to their stack at any point.

Joseph Cheong won his first WSOP bracelet and $687,782 for his first-place finish in the $1,000 DOUBLE STACK in 2019. The tournament drew a total of 6,214 entries to create a prize pool of $5,592,600. Cheong entered the final table with a massive chip lead and converted it into a victory.
