WSOP.com's Fall Online Super Circuit Series reached the high-water mark for buy-ins today, with event #11. The $2k entry, $100k guaranteed, 6-max Super High Roller was announced on Twitter with fanfare and emojis:
"SUPER High Roller Event today at 7pm PST. $100,000 GTD NLH Super High Roller event features a $100,000 GTD and a WSOP Gold Ring."
The announcement immediately puzzled potential contenders. First, New Jersey players in particular have been complaining about the 5:30 p.m. PST start times of the ongoing bracelet events. Pushing the highest-profile gold ring event back a further ninety minutes appeared, at first sight, to be borderline malicious.
Fortunately for high rollers on the east coast, the announcement was an error. And the fact the same error was tweeted twice did not change the 16:00 PST start time listed on the Nevada client.
A second series ring for Hohner
Despite the confusion over the starting time, the event attracted a respectable field of 85 players. An additional 36 re-entries built a prize pool of $229,000, comfortably surpassing the modest guarantee.
The final table formed with a bimodal stack distribution. Half the players had a little under 20bb to play with. The remainder (led by Ryan "saucebae" Hohner) had around twice that.
Other notables among the final six included John "Macallan25" Riordan, fresh off his win in the notorious 12-entrant Online Championship Event #4 and a deep run in Circuit Super Series Event #9.
Riordan would eventually finish fifth, after he lost a flip with 55 against Hohner's AJ. The hand propelled Hohner into a significant chip lead, with twice the stack of his nearest competitor.
Hohner would need those chips after launching an enterprising river bluff into "ElToroRojo72" on a three-flush/four-straight board. After going deep in the tank, ElToroRojo72 eventually called with the one-card straight, and received the good news that Hohner had nothing.
Despite the setback, Hohner used his remaining chips to return to contention, eventually eliminating ElToroRojo72. That set up the heads-up confrontation with Anthony "boom81boom" Chin, with Hohner holding an initial 2:1 chip edge and about 50bb.
After some back-and-forth play, Hohner ground down Chin to below 10bb and well into push-fold territory. The final hand saw Hohner's Q6 need a rivered queen to beat Chin's 55.
In addition to the gold ring, first place paid Hohner $51,268. It's Hohner's second title of the series. He previously won Event #4, the $1k Super High Roller, on October 13.
