The award is now going to be known as the Mike Sexton WPT Champions Cup

There is hardly an honor as big as having one's name used as part of the name of an important event, and it doesn't happen that often. This past Tuesday, the World Poker Tour (WPT) announced its intention of renaming the WPT Champions Cup to the Mike Sexton WPT Champions Cup, forever engraving Sexton’s name into the history books. Sexton doesn’t need an introduction – he’s been the voice of the WPT for years and is a WPT champ and poker hall of famer.

In 2017, Sexton retired from his position as a commentator to serve as chairman of an online poker company. He has been one of the poker's greatest promoters of the game of poker and in the most honest way. He has stood out for his true joy for poker, which most people could tell and appreciate. He continues to be the same kind of person, but, given that he is not constantly showing up on television anymore, it can’t be perceived in the same way. Due to all of his efforts and the exuberant way he promoted poker, Sexton ended up earning the nickname, "The Ambassador of Poker."

The newly-named Mike Sexton WPT Champions Cup honors poker's biggest supporter and the impact he had not only on the WPT, but on poker itself. Sexton reacted to the news after Tuesday's announcement, stating, "I was thrilled to get my name on the WPT Champions Cup in Montreal in 2016. In 15 seasons in the WPT commentator booth, I can attest first-hand how difficult it is to win a WPT Main Event. I thought being inducted into the Poker Hall of Fame would be the greatest moment of my career, but to have the WPT Champions Cup named in my honor and be part of the experience for all WPT champions moving forward is truly the highest peak in my 40 years in poker. Thank you to the World Poker Tour for this humbling distinction.”
