Winning a poker tournament of any kind is a thrilling moment in any poker player's career, recreational or professional. For Angela Jordison, winning the Mid-States Poker Tour (MSPT) Main Event at the Ameristar East Chicago tour stop was a thrill and then some.
Jordison, a well-respected professional player and grinder on the MSPT, outlasted the record-breaking field of 861 players to claim the top prize of $161,513. The score represents a career-best for Jordison, edging out her previous largest cash of $151,144.
“This has just really been on my bucket list,” the newly crowned champion told MSPT reporters. “I love this tour, I love the price point, I love the staff, I love everything about it. Every year on January 1st I write down ‘Win an MSPT’.”
The win represents Jordison's fourth MSPT final table appearance. After finishing in fifth place on each of the previous occasions, Jordison partially attributes her success to studying with JakaCoaching.com.
Recently, Jordison's focus has been primarily on tournaments. “Faraz has been a great resource for me, I’ve been with the site since its inception, I have put a lot of time in on it. I was on a downswing for 6-9 months, so the only way I felt I could control things was to study more. So I did that, and things have worked out!”
'I know what to do in these spots'
The final table ended up being a lengthy affair, with the blinds increasing to the point where the average stack size dropped to sub-twenty big blinds. Jordison, however, didn't let the shallow nature of the situation affect her game. “That is one thing I have focused on in my studying the past year,” said Jordison, “Sub-10 big blinds, sub-15 big blinds. I am prepared so I don’t panic because my mindset is better now. I know what to do in these spots and today it just worked out.”
As far as the money goes, Jordison plans to save the cash, with no plans for an extravagant purchase of any kind. “I don’t have any big plans, I don’t have anything I really want,” Jordison said. “I like to win, so the money will go into the savings.”
Jordison had to miss her flight home to finish out the final table, but with an MSPT trophy under her arm — plus the additional $161,513 — the sacrifice was surely worth it.
