It's important to keep your battery charged throughout the weeks-long grind of the World Series of Poker and few players know this better than Daniel Negreanu.
For years, Negreanu has played a fully-packed schedule of events at the summer series – always keeping his eye on the next bracelet, Player of the Year points, and 25K Fantasy scores.
This summer, however, the GGPoker Ambassador decided to forego a number of events to keep his mind and body in tip-top shape for the tournaments he considers more worthwhile.
In an interview with PokerOrg's Craig Tapscott, Negreanu explained his decision to avoid many of the low to mid stakes tournaments on the schedule – opting to instead conserve his energy levels to ensure a productive run throughout the entire series.
'I've been lucky'
In the latest iteration of his daily WSOP vlog, Negreanu puts his new strategy into practice.
"I've been lucky – knock on wood – not to be sick this World Series," Negreanu said. "Usually, you get what's called 'WSOP flu' or whatever, but I haven't this year. Although, today, I wouldn't say I feel sick necessarily, but definitely depleted. So, we're just gonna take as much R&R time as we possibly can."
After bagging a healthy stack in Day 1B of the Main Event, Negreanu wasn't feeling his best the following morning and had a decision to make: attend the GGPoker Fourth of July party or take the day off to rest and recharge before returning to the felt for Day 2.
Eventually, after a red light therapy session and a much needed couch rot interlude that included, of course, a Rocky screening, Negreanu decided to skip the dance floor drinks and stay in.
"I don't necessarily think it's a good idea when I'm depleted like this to have drinks," Negreanu explained.
While he may have missed out on the fun, Negreanu will return to Day 2 with a fully-charged battery and 122,500 chips.
