Jessica Vierling: 'It's our responsibility to work on and with our dark sides'

How’s your WSOP going?

I have eight cashes in this WSOP so far, including two online. I got pretty deep in the ones with the better structures. I busted the Monster Stack in the last level of Day 2, the Millionaire Maker early Day 3, and I got 135th in the Ladies Event.

The Main Event

I think the most exciting one is still coming up, the Main Event. I also really enjoyed playing the Tag Team event with my friend Maggie (Chien Weng). Playing with and for someone else is different and super motivating.

Feedback after WSOP-C win

I got a lot of positive feedback from people I deeply respect, which was as rewarding as winning the money was relieving. There have also been many female players who told me they enjoyed watching me ‘whip the boys butts’ [laughs].

Another bonus from that event is that I've built connections with the people at the final table with me (Cooper, Christian, etc.), and it's been really fun to see and root for each other at the WSOP.

Who me? A selfie with you?

It is surreal that people come to take pictures with me, and I love every moment of it. It used to only be my Husky Leya who got all the attention [laughs].

Deeply personal

I shared some of my journey in an article following my Circuit win. The short video on YouTube got some nasty feedback, but the people have been amazing overall.

People now walk up to me, sharing that they or their family members struggle with similar health issues. They’ve cheered for me and encouraged me to continue being a role model for them.

I've never had the honor to be in this role to or for anyone, or at least I haven't been aware of it. It increases my expectations of myself to improve and continuously grow in this opportunity.

Advice to handle the pressure

Honestly, mindset coaching, and meditation provide some relief for those who experience what I do. But I don't think there is a 100% silver bullet to ‘not’ struggle.

I had a rather toxic relationship with my past boyfriend, which has recently ended. I’m doing my best to surround myself with very supportive, empathetic, and understanding people.

I don't believe in over-identifying with our mental health issues, but BPD/ADHD/anxiety/depression are a part of who we are. It is our responsibility to work on and with our dark sides, but whatever we have been diagnosed with is NOT eternally condemning.

Many people learn how to deal with their particular situations; whatever they are, they also have positive aspects. For example, people with BPD are pretty spontaneous and go with the flow while being very empathetic with other people's pain.

I guess I'm trying to say to learn to love those aspects of yourself, even if they're challenging.

Best WSOP moment so far?

The coolest thing was that I was approached to headline a fundraiser to ‘regreen’ the planet. It's absolutely awesome to have an opportunity, especially as a poker player, to give back. I'm looking forward to many more opportunities like that in the future.

Jessica recently took down the WSOP-C Commerce Casino main event title and $328,273. She has over $1M in career cashes.
