The 2021 WSOP Event #45: $10,000 Pot-Limit Omaha Championship went to Tommy Le. Le won almost three-quarters of a million for his victory. Plus, of course, the bracelet.
To get to the gold, Le had to beat three players at the final table with bracelets on their wrists: Eli Elezra (4 bracelets), Jeremy Ausmus (2 bracelets), and Anderson Ireland (1 bracelet).
That was just the final table. Among the players who made it to one of the 52 paid spots were Jim Collopy, Stephen Chidwick, Brandon Shack-Harris, J. C. Tran, David Benyamine, Mike Matusow, and Brandon Zack.
Le, for one, was not going to play down the difficulty of this win. But to his credit running a PLO event with Europe in lockdown is a little like holding the Winter Olympics without telling the Norwegians.
"No Limit is more soft," Le explained. "But PLO is still unknown and you kinda just play based on instincts." This view of pot-limit Omaha should prove hopeful to anyone who views post-solver Texas holdem as overly mechanical.
Despite the tough field, the player Le identified as his biggest hurdle near the end was Chris Sandrock )who ultimately took third for $324,800).
"Chris got no fear. He's got this crazy unpredictability that makes the dynamics change quite a bit," Le explained. "I adapted to the game. I always adapt to the table and the game,"
"With Chris, I was trying to lower the variance," he added later.
Three's a crowd
During three handed play, Spurlin, Le, and Sandrock all took turns in the chiplead. But eventually the variance sent Sandrock to the rail and the game settled down a little.
Le began heads up play with Spurlin on the ropes, and was able to push his chip advantage. Before long, Spurlin was all in with a naked middle pair and a couple of overcards to Le's two pair.
Le's two pair held, filling up to a boat on the river. Spurlin won $461,360 for second place.
"I feel like I just won a bracelet," Le said in response to the usual facile post-victory questionaire. "It's the best feeling in the world. It's amazing. I love the WSOP. I come every year. I think it's an awesome event. I really play because I love the game."
