How on Earth did a former Austrian professional footballer rise to poker’s elite status, stack more than $17,000,000 in cashes, and capture three coveted high-stakes Triton Poker titles, all after leaving the pitch in the rearview seven years ago?
And get this, all before his freakin’ thirtieth birthday?
Inquiring poker minds want to know. That’s a good question for super pro Mario Mosböck, Triton Poker’s newest official ambassador.
Mosböck and Triton Poker team up for YouTube debut
Mario doesn’t intend to keep the poker world waiting for too long.
In fact, the first episode of Mosböck’s highly anticipated YouTube channel debuted today at 9am PST — watch it here.
“I've been working on this project for six months now,” says Mosböck. “I have Alexander Pott, a fantastic videographer and editor, who’s working with me. We recorded everything I do at the tables, all the hands I play. Then I sit down afterwards and talk through my thoughts in a documentary style.”
Mosböck’s channel is a project in partnership with Triton Poker to peek inside a former star athlete’s disciplined yet sometimes chaotic mind as he travels the nosebleed stakes of the Triton Poker circuit.
The first episode is set during the $200,000 Triton Invitational in Montenegro, which is one of the most expensive tournament buy-ins of the year.
“Fans and players will get a deep-dive into my thought process and strategy as I face off against some of the best poker pros in the game, including Phil Ivey, Artur Martirosian, Jonathan Jaffe, and other high-stakes regulars.”
One of the inspirations behind the new series for Mosböck came from the lauded Inside the Mind of a Pro series from Winamax.
“A few different things inspired me. I really enjoyed the Adrian Mateos episode from Inside the Mind of a Pro. Obviously, he’s one of the best players in the world, and getting to understand his thought process was amazing.
“I was also inspired by how Alan Keating presented his recent videos, from the high-stakes cash world of things. And also, the All or Nothing series on Prime Network, which is a super high-end sports production.
“I will share my thoughts during a high-stakes series such as Triton. I want viewers to learn and understand top-level poker strategy while being highly entertained. That's the goal of tying all of these aspects together.”
High-stakes poker, up close and personal
It’s highly irregular for a successful high-stakes player also to be just as successful as a content creator in the industry.
Daniel Negreanu has been an exception to the rule, creating some of the most entertaining poker content year after year, while recently other elite players such as Seth Davies and Jeremy Ausmus have thrown their hats into the ring to share their personal stories on the grueling high-stakes circuit.
“Usually, either you're a content creator, or you're a high-stakes poker player. It's hard to do both. The high-stakes arena is very time-consuming, and being a content creator is as well.
“In partnership with Triton, I’ve put a great team together for this project, as well as the best resources with the right goal in mind — I want to capture the actual reality of the high-stakes scene.
“It's rare that you really get to see an inside scoop of what it actually is to play these stakes, what a player is thinking, and talking about.”
When pressed to share in more detail the workings of his own poker mind, Mosböck leaves very little in the tank.
“I think the main thing players can take away from the episodes is the structure of what thought processes exist in a pro’s mind. Some players might not have thought about what it means if someone considers a decision or doesn’t consider a decision. What does it change in their hand range?
"There's actually a difference between someone having been pretty certain of how he bets and, in turn, also considering a different option. That’s obviously a very long and time-consuming process, but it’s little things like that. The top players think about those things and it's very thought-provoking.
“I’m always happy to share anything I know about poker because there are no secrets. All the information about poker is out there. The best players just execute the information that is available slightly better than the rest. In the end, it comes down to execution; that’s the hardest part.
"I love sharing my thoughts about the game. The more people care about learning these things, the better for the game of poker in general.”
