Everyone likes to have a good time at the poker table.
The social aspect of the game is what draws many players to the felt – they're there to hang out with friends, crack a few jokes, and drag in the occasional pot.
Inherently, the game itself isn't very funny. It's a card game based on skill and chance and there's not really much room for humor there.
Unless we're talking about the cruel sense of humor the poker gods employ, am I right, guys? Sorry.
For the most part, it's the players that provide the laughs, not the cards. Thankfully, the poker community seems to self-select for outsized personalities – the kind that provide said laughs.
Below, you'll find a list with five of the funniest moments in televised poker history.
And, yes, several of them do include Phil Hellmuth.
Phil Hellmuth vs. Adam Levy
If, somehow, you've never seen this hand, you're in for a treat.
During the 2008 WSOP Main Event, a clash between Hellmuth and Adam Levy produced one of the most iconic Hellmuth-ian rants of all time.
After calling a preflop raise from Hellmuth with , Levy turned the nut straight on a
board. Hellmuth had
and lost a considerable chunk of his stack when Levy check-raised him on the river.
On seeing Levy's hand, Hellmuth lost something else too – his mind. "He called a raise with queen-ten, honey!" Hellmuth cried to his wife, who was watching on from the rail. "I had a set, he's supposed to bust me anyway."
Levy got his licks back with perhaps the most underrated line of the encounter: "It was an aggressive call."
And it gets even better. Finished with Levy, Hellmuth turns his ire on the dealer – but fails to realize that an entirely different person has taken the chair. Hellmuth then reverts back to bemoaning his bad luck. "Idiot players call raises with queen-ten, they don't even know how to spell poker!"
Griffin Benger vs. Will Kassouf
Let's make one thing clear right off the bat: verbal abuse at the table isn't funny.
With that said, sometimes giving the table bully a taste of his own medicine can be extremely satisfying from an audience perspective.
And that's exactly what Griffin Benger does to Will Kassouf in this pot from the 2016 WSOP Main Event. After likely listening to Kassouf prattle on for hours, Benger couldn't make it through another hand – he snapped.
The resulting verbal sparring is simply can't-miss television.
Plus, it helps a lot that Benger has pocket aces against Kassouf's kings and holds up – it's always nice to see the good guys win. Even if the good guy makes a bit of a goof out of himself in doing so.
The phrase "check your privilege" will surely live on in poker history for years to come.
Tony G vs. Phil Hellmuth
It's an absolute classic. Like the Hellmuth vs. Levy clash, we'd be shocked to hear if any significant number of poker fans haven't seen this one.
Antonas 'Tony G' Guoga against Hellmuth. The PokerStars Big Game. "Of course I lied, Phil. It's poker!"
Despite his faults, it's easy to feel a little bad for Hellmuth in this one.
'Tony G' did lie about looking at his hand before making the raise. While that's not technically against any rule, it is against common decency – which, even at the poker table, should be upheld.
Did 'Tony G' take it a little too far and stray into angle shooting territory? Yes. Should Hellmuth know better than to trust a player like him to be honest? Yes.
Watch it all play out in the video below – the hand begins at the 5:40 mark.
Hellmuth vs. Tyler 'Ninja' Blevins
This one comes to us from a special game that took place on the Hustler Casino Live livestream game – a 'Creator Game' that brought together a few of the biggest names in content creation, like Tyler 'Ninja' Blevins and Jimmy 'MrBeast' Donaldson.
Hellmuth, ever the ambassador, was in the game as well. And he and 'Ninja' played a pot that will never stop being funny.
The two players got it all in preflop for about $50,000 apiece. Hellmuth's against 'Ninja's'
. On the
flop, Hellmuth was a 99% favorite to win the hand. 'Ninja' needed to make running cards to win the pot.
The turn was a good one, as he could now chop on any ten.
"I'll suck a d**k for a ten," he said to the dealer.
Whether or not the gamer made good on that offer is a discussion for another time, but the did complete the board and the two players chopped it up.
Hellmuth, to his credit, kept his cool – but you just know he was absolutely steaming inside.
Carter Gil vs. David Paredes
Here's one you might not have seen before, from the 2013 WSOP Main Event. Carter Gil has top two pair with against David Paredes'
on a
board – and he knows exactly where he's at.
With all of his chips in the middle and awaiting action, he told Paredes, "If you call, you need a queen."
After a little more back and forth, Paredes made the call and saw that he did, in fact, need a queen.
"Put the five of clubs out there, five of clubs," Gil willed. "I was right. I said, 'If you call, you need a queen.'"
And that's exactly what Parades got as the materialized on the river. In the clip, you can see the will to live literally escape Gil's body. It's heartbreaking and hilarious all at the same time.
Lon McEachern chimes in perfectly from the commentary booth: "So, you wanna play poker for a living, huh?"
And then Paredes delievered tahe unintentional needle.
"It was your talking that did it, man, I'm sorry," he told Gil, as the latter made his exit. "You did a good job, man. You did a really valiant... effort."
