Event #60 of the 2021 WSOP is $50,000 Poker Players Championship 6-Handed. This elite event draws the very best and wealthiest players in the poker world to battle for the celebrated Chip Reese Trophy. Players battle through a rotation of eight different games in this five-day event, which began at 3 pm on Sunday, October 31.
In a time when poker players and fans often gripe about a lack of personality in poker, it was surprising to see Dan “Jungleman” Cates appear at an event as serious as the 2021 WSOP $50,000 Poker Players Championship final table, wearing the costume of a popular Japanese anime character. But he did, complete with a stunning blue head of hair. At the conclusion of what he called the “final battle," Cates won the day, earning his first WSOP gold bracelet. He also saw his name etched on the Chip Reese Memorial Trophy, and walked away with the event's top prize of $954,020
Before Day 4 of the Poker Players Championship, Cates put a shout out to the poker community and his followers to “lend me your positive energy, support, and information on players!” This reminded some of his fans of Son Goku, who is the main character of the Japanese anime show Dragon Ball Z. Son Goku calls for everyone on planet earth to send him their spirit and energy to help with his special move, the “Spirit Bomb." Apparently, it worked.
The games in this event included Limit Hold'em, Omaha Hi-Lo 8 or Better, Seven Card Stud, Razz, Seven Card Stud Hi-Lo 8 or Better, No-Limit Hold'em, Pot-Limit Omaha, Limit 2-7 Lowball Triple Draw, No-Limit 2-7, and Lowball Draw. The entire tournament was dealt six-handed. Texas’s Phillip Hui was the defending champion. Hui topped a 74-entry field to earn $1,099,311 the 2019 PPC.
