The WSOP Online festival on GGPoker is gearing up for some big-money events to round out the 33-bracelet schedule in style, and Daniel Negreanu is going to stream his action, starting with the $10K GGMillion$ PLO event on Sunday.
However, in order to play, Negreanu has had to fly from Las Vegas to Vancouver, where he'll sit in a hotel room and play online for a week.
In a post on X, he wrote, "On my way to Vancouver to sit in a hotel room to play online. Flights, travel expenses, to sit in front of a computer instead of just being able to do it from home.
"It is just so incredibly stupid that you have to leave America to play online poker. What are we even doing?"
A fan asked him if there was a way that poker players could get organized in a bid to change the law.
Negreanu isn't hopeful that major change will come. He replied: "Many efforts have been made over the years. I’m not hopeful of anything ever passing at the federal level."
Land of the free
It was over 15 years ago that PokerStars and Full Tilt Poker were forced out of the US market on a day dubbed Black Friday.
Few people thought that it would take this long to get online poker back. But with the exception of a handful of states where regulated online poker is available, it remains unavailable to most Americans.
As Negreanu says, nationwide change still looks a million miles away. In the meantime, the majority of US players are left to play on offshore sites like ACR Poker, not play at all, or travel outside the US to play in an international player pool.
Negreanu is committed enough to travel in the hunt for a WSOP bracelet.
His livestreams will start with the $10K PLO event on Sunday, and there are also Day 1s running in the $25M guaranteed Main Event. Day 2 starts on Monday with the final table on Tuesday.
What else is Negreanu going to play? There's a $25K High Roller on Tuesday, a $5K High Roller Bounty PLO on Thursday, and a $10K Heads Up Championship next Saturday.
The bracelet schedule wraps up with Day 2 of the $10K GGMillion$ High Rollers on Monday, September 28.
