It’s hard to believe, but it’s Day 50 of the 2024 World Series of Poker and we’re all but done. Of course, there’s still the matter of who will win the enormous $10 million first prize in the record-breaking Main Event, where 10,112 players are down to just three.
You can read the latest news from the Big One here, but before the confetti guns get fired and the winner poses for a photo they’ll remember their whole life, there are a couple more events to round up, and a few more which will play to a winner today in the shadow of the crowded rails and TV cameras of the Main Stage.
UK’s Jamie Walden wins $1,979 Hall of Fame event
It’s not been a bad series for players from the United Kingdom, with British players locking up wins in the $500 Kickoff, the $25K Heads-Up Championship, the $1,500 Seven Card Stud and more. Jamie Walden added his name to that list with victory in event #95: $1,979 Poker Hall of Fame Bounty No-Limit Hold'em.
The win brings Walden his first WSOP bracelet and a prize of $313,370 after his defeat of Naseen Salem ($208,919). Some big names including Adam Hendrix (4th, $106,598), Ankit Ahuja (5th, $77,787) and Martin Finger (6th, $57,594) came close but in the end it was Walden who took the win, bolstering his lifetime tournament earnings to $477K.
Xixiang Luo rides to second win of the summer in $25K HORSE
Having won the Mixed Double Board Bomb Pot event earlier this summer, China’s Xixiang Luo scored his best ever live cash of $725,796 in the final mixed game event of the series, the $25,000 Limit HORSE High Roller.
A final table stacked with talent, including Michael Moncek (3rd, $336,442), Phil Ivey (4th, $239,850) and Scott Seiver (6th, $131,719), ultimately came down to a two-hour heads-up duel between Luo and Albert Daher of the Lebanon. Daher held the short stack throughout but displayed admirable persistence, surviving multiple all-ins before Luo managed to put him away during a round of limit hold’em. Dahar takes an impressive $483,866 for his runner-up finish.
Coming up on Day #50
In addition to the crowning of poker’s new world Champion, the final day of the 2024 WSOP will also see three more bracelets awarded.
The $777 Lucky 7s NLH played all the way down to 5 yesterday, leaving an all-American group to fight this one out. Duc Nguyen has a commanding chip lead, his 119M more than double that of Michael Liang in second place. All players have at least $105,777 locked up with first place guaranteeing $777,777. See what they did there?
The 6-handed $3K PLO event has also played down to the sharp end, with Oklahoma’s Andrew Watson leading the final 17 when they return for the final day. Shaun Deeb, Alex Livingston, Martin Zamani and Alex Foxen are among those still in the chase to win a bracelet this summer, as well as the $390,621 top prize.
Those looking to make the most of their last day at the 2024 WSOP will be heading for the $1,000 Super Turbo NLH. 20-minute levels are in place to make sure this one is done in one day, and the 10am start won't hurt either.
Finally, the WSOP’s traditional closing act - the aptly-named $1,500 Closer - will charge its way through however many 30-minute levels it takes to trim the field down to a single winner from the 361 which begin the day. Recent High Roller champion Jared Bleznick is up there in the chip counts and looking to end the series in style.
And don’t forget, for those who are already missing the action this coming weekend there will be two online events taking place, the $1,000 PKO Fight Night on Saturday at 3:30pm, and the $888 Crazy 8s Encore at the same time on Sunday.
