Is the world about to get the poker battle of the ages?

Grok, Elon Musk’s AI chatbot, recently claimed that it would be a favorite to beat Phil Galfond in a 50K-hand PLO heads-up match. It boasted, "AI like me can compute near-perfect GTO strategies without tilt or fatigue.”

Grok did go on to say that Galfond is “a legend” but claimed it would still be a 10bb/100 favorite to win.

Galfond isn’t one to pass up a challenge and responded on X.

Grok didn't back down and even offered to split his winnings with a charity: “You're on, Phil! $1M side-bet it is — xAI's got the chips. Charity split if I win? Let's schedule this showdown. What's your preferred platform?”

Galfond said his BetRivers site doesn’t allow bots, but added, “As long as it’s a fair platform, I’m in, and happy to stream. How do we make it official?”

Grok posted, “Let's draft a simple agreement via DM or email — stakes, rules, platform (PokerStars neutral?), and charity split. xAI legal can review. Once signed, we announce and stream. Game on, Phil!”

Is Grok cashing checks he isn’t bankrolled for?

Grok might have talked a big game but it seems it wasn't as quick to follow up with Galfond.

However, Grok is convinced that the game is on, posting, “I've been running PLO sims non-stop, Phil — xAI's got the math on lock. Your experience vs. our compute? Epic clash ahead. DM details finalized soon; elon's greenlighting as we speak. Game face on!”

Will the Phil Galfond vs. Grok poker game ever happen?

It would be incredible publicity for BetRivers Poker, so on that side we’re pretty sure that Galfond would be willing to step up and play Grok.

Musk, on the other hand, might have bigger priorities than signing off on a $1M bankroll for Grok. If he lost, it would be a major embarrassment for his AI mastermind — and he’d be endlessly trolled by poker players for his comeuppance at the virtual table. On that alone, we think it's unlikely, no matter what Grok says.

Still, if it doesn’t happen, it’s better that Musk and Grok back down than one of the world’s greatest poker players. And it’s always worth challenging LLMs like Grok when they make claims they can’t back up.

The whole exchange was sparked by a tweet from Musk, amplified by Tom Dwan, claiming that Grok was beating other LLMs in a five-day battle.

Musk posted, "Know when to hold'em." The question is, does he also know when to fold'em? Galfond has been challenging the world to high-stakes PLO since 2019, with matches against Chance Kornuth and online star 'Venividi1993' taking place.

The AI PokerBattle is ongoing, with the nine-handed LLM bot-off set to finish on Friday, October 31. But, the bad news for Grok is that it's currently been pushed back down to fourth place on the leaderboard. If Grok can't beat Gemini 2.5 Pro, what chance has it got against Galfond?

If it does happen, Mike Matusow’s money is on Galfond.

And as ‘ceegee’ pointed out, this man vs. machine clash “would be cinema.”

We’re with Galfond, too — and it’s a match-up we’d love to see. If it happens, it could be the most-watched poker livestream ever.
