Event #16 of the 2021 WSOP is the $10,000 Limit Hold’em Championship tournament. This high-roller event ran for three days starting on October 7. Players started the tournament with 60,000 chips and played 60-minute levels on Day 1 and 90-minute levels on Day 2 and Day 3.
It's rare for a Limit Hold’em event to catch the attention of the poker world. But this time, three-time, FiveThirtyEight.com Creator Nate Silver and World Series of Poker gold bracelet winner John Monnette went heads-up for the win, sending social media buzzing. After their tense heads-up battle of two hours and 45 minutes, Monnette earned his fourth WSOP bracelet, plus the tournament’s top prize of $245,680.
Monnette’s win boosted his total live tournament earnings to over $3 million. The majority of that money came during WSOP events. The four-time bracelet winner has 72 career cashes in WSOP events, piling up an impressive prize money stack of $2,604,551. He won his three earlier bracelets in the $10,000 No-Limit 2-7 Lowball Draw Championship in 2017 ($256,610), the $5,000 Seven Card Stud tournament in 2012 ($190,826), and the $2,500 8-Game Mix in 2011 ($278,144).
The $10,000 Limit Hold’em Championship in 2019 drew 118 players and a prize pool of $1,109,200. Juha Helppi won his first career WSOP bracelet and the first-place prize of $306,622. The heads-up battle between Helppi and Mike Lancaster lasted for four hours before Helppi finally emerged victorious.
