Event #70 of the 2021 WSOP is the $888 CRAZY EIGHTS No-Limit Hold'em. This tournament had four opening days from November 11 to 14.
Play came to a suitably silly end when a player wearing a Grinch hat came away with nearly a million dollars.
The Crazy Eights event was hatched from the WSOP’s advertising deal with 888.com. The name of the tourney blends references to 888.com, the lucky number eight, and the Crazy 88 — the gang of Japanese mafia Samurai from Kill Bill vol. 1 (2003).
The event starts with an $888 buy-in and a first prize of $888,888. The final table cash prizes are all end with three 8s as well. Second place awards $400,888, third $200,888, and so on.
Thanks to a massive field of 5,252 entries, this tournament had one of the biggest turnouts this year, apart from the Main Event. That generated an impressive prize pool of $4,150,761. Yet the turnout was still only about half the size of the field in 2019 (10,185 entries) for the Crazy Eights tourney.
David “Global Grinch” Moses won the bracelet, wearing his ostentatious green Grinch hat.
“A few years ago, I was one of like five or six people who started streaming on Global Poker,” Moses said. “I had a Grinch avatar at some point. Because I streamed and ranted, I became known as ‘The Global Grinch.’ So I bought this hat and as a joke, I wore it to a $400 tournament in Cherokee at the circuit stop. People came up and said ‘I love the hat,’ […] I liked the attention and it just became a schtick.”
